This morning’s sunrise was shaping up to be a pretty one but nothing really special…then the squalls of a weird kind of snow rolled in. I watched this one change the sunrise from a crystal clear, tangerine dream to a muted, post-apocalyptic mood-fest. Phases of shifting colours from this morning’s sunrise. The cold(ish) air made for gin-clear visibility but the sun’s light was far too harsh when it rose - which was still lovely. The swell that hit the north Cornish coast yesterday was, in my opinion, bigger than Storm Ciarán and had a real punch to it. As did the sideways hail and the mother of all squalls that greeted me the second I had set everything up. It was pretty miserable getting my face pebble-dashed as I tried to protect my camera, everything blowing around, just sitting there, wating it out, questioning myself. But then in an instant it all cleared (relatively) and the sea was boiling. The low-in-the-sky late afternoon sun made an unexpected appearance, lighting up the salty sea-spray that was hanging in the air with a welcome warmth and also added some contrast to the scene. It was magical. As some of you know I use, almost exclusively, vintage manual focus lenses - sometimes known as legacy lenses - for my photography. This is a topic I could bore you all with but in summary I love the way the beautiful lenses designed for film interact with a digital sensor and vice versa. The way the multi-coatings translate the colour. Two technologies from different eras working together not by design. There’s a good piece about vintage lenses in @ap_magazine a couple of issues ago. Finding these beautiful lenses in great condition is a real struggle so I was more than delighted when I was offered the iconic Carl Zeiss Jena 35mm Flektogon circa 1980s by my friend @frankiegrace66 Every old lens has a story or stories to tell (like the bowl in Tibor Fischer’s book The Collector Collector) but 9 times out of 10 you’ll never know them. This lens, however, was Fran’s dear Dad’s, a keen photographer who lived overlooking Tregirls and there are many tales so I was delighted to be given first refusal to own it before it was traded in. So it was a real, heartfelt privilege to take some photos this morning using this wonderful lens. This is the first time light has passed through this lens to create an image since Fran’s Dad used it, possibly of this beach. What an honour that I am so grateful for. I hope I did and will continue to do it justice.
